Guadalajara Travel Guide
๐Getting to Estadio Akron
Estadio Akron is about 20 minutes northwest of Guadalajara's city center, in the suburb of Zapopan. From Guadalajara International Airport (GDL), it's a 30-minute drive. The city's Mi Macro Periferico (BRT bus system) connects parts of the city, but a taxi or Uber to the stadium is the most practical option ($5-10 USD). Match-day shuttle buses will likely run from the city center.
๐ Where to Stay
Centro Historico is the heart of Guadalajara โ colonial buildings, the cathedral, and Mercado San Juan de Dios (one of Latin America's largest markets). Chapultepec/Americana has the best nightlife and restaurants โ Avenida Chapultepec is the main strip. Tlaquepaque is a traditional arts village now absorbed by the city โ beautiful for shopping and day trips. Zapopan (near the stadium) has modern malls and mid-range hotels.
๐ดFood & Drink
Guadalajara is the birthplace of tequila and birria. Start with birria โ slow-cooked goat or beef stew, served with tortillas and consomme for dipping. Birria Chololo is a local institution. Tortas ahogadas (drowned sandwiches in chili sauce) are the street food signature. For tequila, take a day trip to the town of Tequila โ an hour by bus โ and tour the distilleries. Mercado San Juan de Dios has food stalls on the upper floors with everything from seafood to pozole.
โWeather
Guadalajara in June-July is warm with daily rain. Expect 28-32ยฐC (82-90ยฐF) with afternoon thunderstorms. It sits at 1,566m (5,138 ft), so evenings cool down to a comfortable 17-19ยฐC (63-66ยฐF). Estadio Akron has a partial roof but many seats are exposed. Bring rain protection.
