Monterrey Travel Guide
๐Getting to Estadio BBVA
Estadio BBVA is in Guadalupe, a suburb east of Monterrey's center. From Monterrey International Airport (MTY), it's a 25-minute drive. The Metrorrey (metro system) Line 2 runs near the stadium area but you'll still need a short Uber or walk. The city is car-centric, so Uber or taxi is the most convenient option. Match-day transport will include shuttle services.
๐ Where to Stay
Barrio Antiguo is the historic center โ colonial buildings, bars, restaurants, and a lively night scene. San Pedro Garza Garcia is the wealthy suburb south of town โ modern malls, upscale restaurants, and the closest thing to a walkable commercial district. Centro has budget hotels and is near the metro. Valle Oriente has business hotels and is convenient for the stadium. Monterrey is spread out โ expect to Uber everywhere.
๐ดFood & Drink
Monterrey is the meat capital of Mexico. Cabrito (roast young goat) is the specialty โ try El Rey del Cabrito downtown. Carne asada here is taken seriously โ thin-cut beef grilled over mesquite. Machaca (dried beef) for breakfast burritos. The beer culture is strong โ Monterrey is home to FEMSA/Cuauhtemoc (Carta Blanca, Tecate, Bohemia). Craft breweries are booming in Barrio Antiguo. For something different, try the Korean food on the west side โ Monterrey has a sizable Korean community.
โWeather
Monterrey in summer is extremely hot โ 35-40ยฐC (95-104ยฐF) with high humidity. It sits in a valley surrounded by mountains, which traps the heat. Estadio BBVA is open-air. Hydrate, wear sunscreen, and avoid midday sun. Evening matches will be much more comfortable. Occasional thunderstorms provide brief relief.
